Where've you been? Microsoft realized awhile back that they'd lose the console war on exclusive software alone so they were left no other choice than to at least try to win in their practices and policies around it.
This is why we have cross-play with Nintendo and PC players whereas Sony is still segmenting their online communities into the Playstation bubble.
They also occasionally put out innovative tech like the Kinect which sucked for games, but has the design community still using and buying them up as it's an amazing consumer grade 3D scanner. Then there's whatever the hell they'll do with the Hololens... which I hear is only a couple of upgrades away from being ready for consumption (something about the peripherals still sucking or blah blah).
If you absolutely had to buy a console, an Xbox would probably be the wiser choice. Unless you wanted it to play games, in which case there are none.
