Archery is lethal in Warband at higher levels. My old character had a masterwork warbow and murdered many. Interesting observation about the archery skills of the companions -- I do not doubt this.
If I were a bruiser melee type, I would certainly be trying to find that hammer, which seems to be sadly underrated. It's not for me, though, as I always make horsey/archery types and let my men do the face-smashing.
