ok, the sunflower has rich history as a native, north american (not mexico) plant
this makes more sense now
in all likelihood, this indeed was a corpse flower, and the indians were eating their ancestors this way
and although possibly a completely different heritage; i would look into any similarities between the sunflower and venus flytrap. the creature who is the master of plants, and can actually make plants move, seems to have taken various form at some time or another
