Do you really think I'm suggesting that the second amendment sprang from people being worried about what to do with squirrel guns? Of course they're thinking of English common law. They're also thinking of how the colonies were not permitted to assemble in what might be political meetings, especially under arms. This is what caused the ruckus in Concord.

The amendment is making clear that the highest law in the land makes provision for the assembly and arming of militias in the event that an enemy threatens the general well-being. I used the squirrel gun example because I really don't think anyone gave two hoots about individuals having guns. In an agrarian society, a lot of people had guns. What was at issue was getting all these people with guns together in an organized group. That's all I'm saying. If you want to read individuals into that sentence, great, but until the Supreme Court ruled that it applied to individuals, it wasn't a thing.
