Another bit of common advice is to arm your settlers with guns collected from enemies. There are several problems with this. Two are especially bad.

First, guns you collect from your own travels weigh you down and you have to remember which settlements need them. I need to use my inventory for collecting junk, not guns. Also, with 30-odd settlements, I can't remember who has good guns and who doesn't.

Second: if you rely on collecting weapons from enemies who attack settlements, you'll be disappointed. At higher levels, you may have an occasional Gunner attack, which is nice because they have decent arms. But the chances are much greater that you'll have raiders and super mutants. At high levels, raiders can have okey-doke things like combat rifles and the occasional assault rifle, but this is only if the raiders themselves are high-level. Mostly, you get puny low-level raiders with pipe weapons and shotguns. Super mutants are a total waste in every way. Even warlords rarely have anything good.

No, the best thing to do is set up a tier-3 weapon shop in the settlement. That way, you're guaranteed to find a passel of good guns with some decent mods. Since you'll have all the money in the world, this is the most convenient approach.
