RE: Microsoft seems to be trying
The only problem with the play anywhere feature is it being tied to the Windows 10 store, but it is a cool addition for sure. I'd like them to go even further and allow crossplay between One and PC on titles where it makes sense. (AKA: Anything other than competitive shooters)
I can vouch for both Doom 2016 and Hellblade. These days I gauge a game's worth by how much I end up torturing myself with it doing challenge runs, and ended up finishing Doom on ultra nightmare using just the default pistol and grenades. It took a week of cursing and copious shaking of fists in a Shatner-esque display, but in the end I can firmly say that it was indeed NOT worth it and was actually a massive waste of my time. But hey, I have that useless feather in my cap now.
Hellblade triggered some long forgotten memories for me, which is part of the reason why I found it so interesting, and the plot relatable.
