Subject: I bought Factorio

As you probably know, Factorio is a 2D game predicated on the idea that you land on an alien planet and have to build a rocket ship to leave. To do this, you have to gather resources and build various machines. Since you need a lot of materials in order to build increasingly sophisticated technology, you need to automate everything.

Trailer offering basic overview:

Ultimately, you end up turning the whole map into a giant factory, complete with robots and railroads. The native inhabitants are aggravated by your pollution, so you have to defend your machinery with walls, turrets, and so on. The goal is to produce as few emissions as possible and finally construct your rocket.

I really like it so far. The only problem is that I'm still trying to figure out the first tier of automation, so I'm taking a lot of faulty baby steps and having to start over. I don't mind this as much as I thought I would. Every time I restart, I get a little further and learn a little more.

It's very absorbing, but it's not the kind of thing you can play in 30-minute spurts. I'm going to have to set aside some serious time to evolve from rudimentary fossil-fuel tech to electricity, and thence to clean electricity. That's okay, because I can see myself really enjoying all this. It's sort of like the fits and starts of an early Morrowind career that you know will grow into something much more interesting if you can just figure things out and be patient.
