Subject: Epic Games rolls critical hit against Valve

Well, theoretically.

The gist: Epic Games has decided to start its own store to compete with Steam. (Google for articles and such on this.)

Ordinarily, I would yawn and consign this hubris to the pile heaped with Origin, Green Man, GOG, etc. However, Epic is offering an irresistible share/cut structure to developers in the wake of Valve's dumb decision to beat up on small studios. They get an even bigger bonus if they use one of the Unreal engines.

Another reason I perceive this as a real threat to Valve is that Epic is drowning in money. I think they're making something like $200 million a week or some such ludicrous figure. Maybe that's $200 million a month, but it's still too much. They need somewhere to put all that cash, and they're running out of places. Therefore, this store will be extremely well-funded. Therefore (2), it will probably operate really well.

Also, owing to Valve's stinginess, Steam sales have been lackluster for quite some time. I expect that Epic will spend their first couple of years shaming Valve on this score.

So while I don't look forward to creating another online account, I imagine this one will be worth it.

You should keep an eye on this.
