I knew there were two different spellings, and that a Brit came up with the name, but I didn't realize that Davy initially spelled it's modern name as aluminum, only to later change it to aluminium after being egged on by others. Ironically, aluminium was the common spelling in the US, only to be later supplanted by aluminum. Like the french, 'murica just has to be different.
I know these things because Wikipedia told me so.
