Hm. I lost my original point, which was that it wouldn't be a good idea to make a movie.
At least I wouldn't try it. Downton Abbey was conceived and developed as a series, with a whole different apparatus than other TV shows. For example, it would be harder to make a movie of 24 than The X Files. It wasn't a stretch to make a Flintstones movie. It wasn't a good idea, but it wasn't as hard as, say, the conversion of something like Northern Exposure.
Downton Abbey was more serialized than other serials. It thrived on carefully woven plot threads, sort of like Dark Shadows, and we all know what happened when they made a movie out of that. Actually, they made two movies, and neither was any good. Then they made the Johnny Depp comedy, which had an Addams Family identity crisis.
They should save time and money by going straight to comedy. I think it would work if they threw in the Flintstones.
