Speaking of famous people, did you know that Charles Dickens was a compulsive walker? In between editing magazines and working on two books simultaneously, he would walk. As an off-and-on insomniac, he sometimes walked all night, venturing into the most perilous areas of London simply, I assume, to expend his energy or have something to do.
A lot of Victorians were like that. There weren't many fat ones. They seemed to have a lot of pent-up energy. I think this is the real reason Cecil Rhodes went to Africa. He just wanted a good walk.
