I personally don't care for toyotas because I think they make the most boring cars in the world, BUT, if you like them you can consider:
1. Toyota Matrix - it's actually a corolla platform, but a bit taller so it's a bit easier to get in and out of. Also, having a hatchback is pretty damn practical when you're shopping at ikea. The Pontiac Vibe is the same car, so consider that if you can get one for cheaper.
2. VW Golf (rabbit, whatev) - pretty nice interior, and very spacious. Also has a great diesel option.
3. Subaru Impreza hatchback - Roomy, and has AWD to battle the snow. Not the most fuel efficient though.
4. Honda fit - I can't think of a single time i've heard or read a bad thing about it.
5. Maybe one of the various box things? Ex. Scion xB, Kia Soul, I don't know who else.
