Thanks for these. Firstly, I'm not necessarily looking for a compact. I'm looking economy, sure, but would be willing step up a model (since I am due a promotion this year!). Might even consider a Rally Sport model. Reliable and easy on gas is where it is at.
"1. Toyota Matrix - it's actually a corolla platform, but a bit taller so it's a bit easier to get in and out of. Also, having a hatchback is pretty damn practical when you're shopping at ikea. The Pontiac Vibe is the same car, so consider that if you can get one for cheaper."
One of my students and her partner just got one of these. Its really not a bad car at all, surprisingly roomy inside.
"2. VW Golf (rabbit, whatev) - pretty nice interior, and very spacious. Also has a great diesel option."
I considered getting one of these last time I was shopping. My sister has driven nothing but for the past 8 years or so--just totaled one, and replaced it. I would probably seriously consider the Jetta instead but would have to test the ease of entry and exit first.

And its the official car of lesbians everywhere. No, sorry, that is the Outback. I like these, but 1) we really don't get that much snow here, and 2) gas. And I am not sold on AWD at all--some of my colleagues at work got an Audi just for the AWD option (so they said, but they are Aussies so they probably couldn't say "Fucking look at us, we've arrived bitches!"). Meh.

Don't know this one. I was seriously tempted by a Vtech Civic--Honda offered me 0% to get it too. Lots of fun to drive, but in SoCal they are thieve magnets (and this one was just asking to be stolen--t-roof, dark window tint, glass pack muffler).
