according to consumer reports' biggest-cube-we-can-fit-in-the-car test, and my own experience, the prius is larger than the matrix. I know this primarily because I tried to talk my wife into not spending the extra money on a Prius and use that $ for a decent stereo with aux in and bluetooth.
My father has a 2001 or 2 jetta tdi wagon he uses for his sales route (all of NY state pretty much). The pull when you floor it is underwhelming, but the milage is pretty good. AFAIK it is maybe 5-10MPG better than the prius, but diesel costs more, and the prius has more pep. I probably wouldn't go for a diesel model myself.
