I was thinking of Peter Molyneux
and how I miss him. It's true that he had a touch of Barnum, but when you consider what he really did, you have to pause.
Who else would even THINK of Black & White, Fable, or The Movies? Maybe someone like Maxis. They come closest. But Molyneux was a much greater innovator, IMO.
I loved The Movies. What an amazing idea -- a tycoon game in which you actually make movies and upload them for the world to see. That was so new and crazy at the time that only a nut like Molyneux could have pitched it and made it work as well as it did.
And for all its faults, one of my favorite games of all time was Fable. Who else would come up with a character that could age, gain weight, affect good/bad alignment, buy houses, marry, and build a skillset that really worked. Not only all this -- the NPCs reacted to the character in appropriately and riotously funny ways.
Compare what Molyneux did with the crap available today. The man will go down in history as one of the truly great geniuses of gaming.
