I don't know what sort of revelation these devs that are building old school FPS games had, but the last four I've played have really nailed it. Before that, most of the old school shooter genre looked like the thing it was trying to emulate, but it didn't quite play like it, something would always feel off. Games like Apocryph, the Shadow Warrior reboots, Strafe, Wrack, Quake 4, etc etc.
Amid Evil, Dusk, Project Warlock and Ion Maiden (And to a lesser extent, Devil Daggers) all have an indescribable thing that elevates them above just being pretenders and I have no idea what it is. Dusk in particular stands out, it's the last game I've played in a very long time that put me into a zen state, it also helps that it reminds me a lot of Blood.
