I needed to add something about Cersei:
Everybody thinks she's the ultimate villain. One critic even called her "the most dangerous person in Westeros."
What they overlook is that none of Cersei's plots ever really work. They cause a lot of harm, but they always blow up in her face. She's also a terrible ruler. Unlike Tywin, she has no ability to see the big picture or do any political multitasking. All of her schemes are wrecked by her tunnel vision, which is driven by narrow spite against her enemy of the day.
When Tywin was alive, he was correct not to give her any meaningful responsibility. The same goes for Jaime and Tyrion for different but obvious reasons. In a way, I felt sorry for Tywin. All he cared about was the preeminence of the Lannister family, but he could never ensure this because his children were all so crazy and useless. He was alone and without hope. As a final insult, he died on a potty.
Tywin is really the unsung hero of Game of Thrones. He was the only Medici among a passel of Borgias. He tried to keep the lid on things, not only in his family but in the other houses as well. He was a bigger loss than people realize.
