One of things that defined the old games, imo, was design. I mean that the old devs built maps strategically and placed enemies/obstacles tactically. They also understood pace and balance. They had the ability to take these basic priorities and fit them together organically. Everything else was stripped away. Maybe these neo-devs understand that.
