Tywin and Ned were probably the two most necessary deaths from a plot device standpoint. George must have had an idea napkin on the fridge that read, "lots of kids from north wreak havoc in Westeros? How? Reasonable ruler/dad dies maybe?" next to another that read, "lots of kids from Kings Landing wreak havoc in Westeros? How? Reasonable ruler/dad dies maybe?"
