I used quakespasm last time I played. You can use one of those to use old texture mode, had the same problem as you back when I played:
gl_texturemode gl_nearest gl_nearest_mipmap_nearest
gl_texturemode GL_NEAREST_MIPMAP_LINEAR
gl_flashblend 1
