Subject: RE: An hour and a half

I recently moved. Here was my experience trying to close my various AT&T accounts:

DirecTV

I closed the account on Jan. 29 and asked them to send me a kit or label to return equipment, since the timing didn't work for me to go to a UPS or FedEx store (they have an arrangement such that if you take your stuff to a participating store, the staff will box it up and send it back for free). At my new address, it occurred to me that I should have gotten a label some days before. So I took my equipment to a FedEx store on my own and got them to send it. Good thing, too, because a few days later, I got my label, but because DirecTV had delayed so long, I didn't have enough time to beat their penalty date.

AT&T DSL

Again, I closed the account on Jan. 29. In both February and March, I received statements, both showing that I had a balance of $0.00. I expect to get the same thing in April. I don't know what they're thinking other than nursing some doomed hope that I'll reactivate.

AT&T landline

I did receive a "final" statement, but they decided that I'd overpaid. So I got another "final" statement with a credit, followed by a check for the difference. Yesterday, I got a "final revised" statement indicating that I owed $6.72. I paid it. You don't argue with these people. You just pay them. They'll over-correct later.

AT&T cheap cell phone account

I don't even want to talk about this. I just hope I've seen the last of it.
