I've also been playing the original Diablo
I owned it way back when, but eventually donated my disk long ago when I got rid of most of my physical media; Diablo as a series never really hooked me for some reason. But last year I picked-up a PSP Go and since it can natively run PS1 games, I got to looking through the PS1 catalog and discovered a bunch of old PC games were ported over.
Figuring I'd never really played it much, I put Diablo PSX on it and really loved the crap out of it. The load times were slow, but it wasn't a huge deal, since it was nice to play on the handheld and the controls were excellent. I finally beat the game and I'll be damned if I didn't come away from it in love and I don't normally like the style of game that it spawned.
So, I picked it up on GoG since it was recently released and am enjoying it all over again on my laptop; I have to say, one of the best things about the game is the pace, which is very slow and deliberate. Diablo 3 has you being a whirlwind of death, just flying through everything, even bosses, but the first game it really feels like death lurks around every corner. Any old enemy can kill you and you really have to be on your feet, so you can get some distance if necessary and always keep an eye on how many health potions you have.
And I know it's inconvenient, but I like the idea of Identify Scrolls and Town Portal Scrolls that you need to remember to keep on you. I can't quite place it, as I know it can be stupid to have to remember to keep these things on you, but something about having them and not having it as an innate ability just makes the game more interesting.
