Yes, things are very perfunctory before lvl 70. They just want you to concentrate on the story, so you basically sleepwalk through it.
Crafting and gold only become super important when you start the post-70 endgame, and you have to start becoming apprehensive about enemies. If you aren't geared correctly, they'll one-shot you a lot. So D3 becomes a gear game. You stop paying attention to all those blue and yellow things and focus on legendaries and sets. Survivability becomes a real thing, and you start paying attention.
