How I misjudged Skyrim
I'm pretty sure I've dismissed Skyrim in the past because I thought there was nothing to do or see after you finish the bigger quests. I recall mentioning that all the caves were the same, or something to that effect.
Nothing could be further from the truth. I am here to apologize to the Bethesda cave designers. The game seems to have dozens of caves, but they're handcrafted and imaginatively designed. Last night, I was in
Darkfall Cave
. I just randomly found it northeast of Markarth. I don't know whether it's part of a quest, but it's one of the best dungeon designs I've ever seen -- full of variety, purpose, atmosphere, and surprise. Somebody put some work into this place.
The same goes for all the other caves and crypts I've been re-examining. This is a well-crafted world. I guess I didn't appreciate it until after I had played Fallout 4 to death. FO4 has extremely good incidental world design, but its dungeons don't approach those of Skyrim.
I may have more Skyrim reports if I don't find something else to play. This way, when combined with Necro's helpful technical notes, you'll have more complete documentation. As the Ghorak Manor orcs would say in Morrowind, "There is much to learn, much to discuss."
