Subject: RE: How I misjudged Skyrim

Now I do have a Skyrim criticism, and that is aimed at its leveling system. As you probably are aware, you level up by using your skills. Period. You get no XP for completing quests or discovering things or whatever. Instead, you have to whack X number of moles to get Y number of skill points, which increases your skill level. Z number of skill levels increases your character level. So it's possible to do what I did, to wit: max out your One-Handed skill so that you no longer generate any skill points by whacking a mole with a one-handed weapon. You can sort of overcome this by exploiting a crafting skill like Smithing, or getting enemies to hit you to increase your Light Armor "skill" or your Blocking "skill," etc. (I put "skill" in quotes here because it doesn't take any skill to get beaten up, but there it is.)

Apparently, Bethesda added some kind of "Legendary" skill point system that lets you go beyond this, but I don't know how that works. I can't be expected to learn something so involved when I'm getting lost in caves and whacking frostbite spiders (mole variety number 421).

So now I'm trying to do everything I can to level two more times so I can learn the Merchant skill in the Speech constellation. This lets me sell any item to any merchant. If I can get this, I can start some serious enchanting and abuse the combined trainer/merchants at the College of Winterhold. Maybe I'll put some points in Magicka so I can actually use things like Illusion and Alteration.

This is going to preoccupy me for the foreseeable future. I must figure out how to exploit this bizarre system. Expect to see my reports any day now.
