To be fair to the guy, it's easy to die if you're not alert or if you go too fast. You have to inch forward and expect unfair ambushes. They should call it Dungeon Crawl Fo Rear.
About midway through, the game stops the potion welfare that you had at the beginning, so you have to rely more on a healer. Also, the item drops are rubbish, which makes reaching a town a pretty big deal. Gold actually matters.
DS2 improves on the original game in numerous ways. You get fewer party members, but they're more powerful. You also get lots of good drops, especially in the late game. Unfortunately, the first act is terrible -- bad voice acting as well as too many elves and trees. It all works out later.
