I forgot -- in DS1, there is no fast-travel, hence another reason why towns become important. Also, you go forever before getting to a trader. I actually like this. When you finally get to a town, you feel safe in a way that is lost in other games. Buying things is a huge treat. Additionally, you really want to deliver the messages you were entrusted with in the previous town. You feel a responsibility. Very cool how they did this.
