Subject: Model car brainstorm

I was going to make a replica of the Pontiac Firebird from Smokey and the Bandit, but then I thought, Why stop there? Why not do a whole tribute to the movie? How hard could it be to find the Firebird, Jerry Reed's Kenworth truck, maybe Jackie Gleason's cop car, and even some extras like rest stop scenery and maybe some little human figures to represent Burt Reynolds and Sally Field?

As it turns out, it's dang hard. I can find the Firebird but not the truck. From what I've read, I can piece together enough truck parts to come up with something that would pass, but I may have to use a different base vehicle. I mean, only serious fans of the movie would be able to tell the difference.

The Buford T. Justice Pontiac LeMans is pretty much impossible to find except as a diecast. However, I might be able to get a reasonable facsimile and craft some police stuff to go on it.

The character figurines I haven't even looked into. I imagine they're quite hard to find in the right scale. I might have to just use stand-in figures and modify them.

It shouldn't be too hard to get rest stop or truck stop scenery, but the other obstacles are so challenging that I'm inclined to give up. Even if I could find inauthentic items, I doubt I'd have the skill to make them work properly.

So okay. Maybe I'll start with the Firebird and see what develops. This could take years, but I refuse to half-ass such an important tribute project. I can only hope that some company will see the value in producing an entire Bandit line of products, right down to the Coors cases and Snowman's CB radio.
