That's more or less the case.
For the most part AMD will work fine as long as you stay away from reference cards. The main downsides they have are minor graphical glitches (especially for new games), drivers that need more frequent updates (aka, "hotfixes"), and slightly slower than advertised speeds from cooking benchmarks.
