That's a pretty serviceable noir, but I never understood why they kept putting Dick Powell in those hard-boiled things. As you may recall, he was a matinee crooning idol, so he wasn't suited for this kind of movie. IMO, he wrecked
as a horribly miscast Philip Marlowe. Compare Robert Montgomery in
Lady in the Lake
and, of course, the definitive Humphrey Bogart in the best Marlowe movie,
The Big Sleep
. (As a side note, I like Lady in the Lake mainly because I have a necro-crush on Audrey Totter.)
Anyway, Powell as a tough guy? No. He's better as a betrayed academic/screenwriter in
The Bad and the Beautiful
. Of course, good luck paying attention to him when Lana Turner is in the same movie.
