It finally happened to me
I've had my first hard drive failure. It was a 120GB SSD newegg freebie that I got with a CPU purchase or something mfg'd by teamgroup. There were lots of reviews noting failures, so I had plenty of warnings, but I didn't heed them. Despite having some additional HDDs in the machine, there was a lot of crap that I solely kept on that drive and didn't backup. That's what I get for being cheap and lazy. I'm rectifying the problem by still being cheap, just less so. Bought a 1TB intel m2 drive (<$100) and two 6TB HDDs that I'll RAID, and then setup some backup scheduler for stuff that I keep on the main drive.
I'm filing a warranty claim, but I don't know what's the point, as I don't intend on using that manufacturer's hardware again. Don't know about data recovery. I might tear into the thing (it's an enclosed 2.5 drive), but I'm not sure how much I could do, unless I luck out and find it's a repairable power supply section.
