the buffer write is decent, as long as you have a bunch of unused space. I'm not expecting to write large amounts of data to that drive frequently. Maybe I'll regret it.
I fixed a PS3 by reflowing it, but that's because solder joint issues with massive BGAs were common back in those days. I don't expect it to fix this drive, but it's simple enough to try. Given the seemingly high failure rate, I'm guessing it's a design issue rather than a component issue. On PCBs with BGA devices, many of the pads are vias, so possibly too much solder got sucked into it during reflow leaving minimal solder at the actual joint.
If I cared enough I would consider transplanting the flash chip - the ball pitch isn't excruciatingly tiny. That is, assuming it's not the flash that's bad, which given that the drive shows nothing in the bios, makes me guess it's not.
