RE: It finally happened to me
I did once find a free open source utility for newbs that allowed me to recover my wife's data from a bad drive maybe 15 years ago.
My boss gave it to me and it was kind of creepy how many work files I could have recovered. Some of them were even from users at work who left so long before, they survived multiple quick formats and years of useage.
