I can't help you. My fantasy/sci fi diet is complete trash. This is mostly by choice since the "legit" authors get up my nose with all their facile social indictments and solutions. Heinlein is especially bad, but you may like him anyway.

I think I've gone on before about how I like more pulpy authors like David Gemmell. I'm guilty of liking Salvatore's Icewind Dale books, as well as his Dark Elf trilogy. Now that's pure trash, but I like it better than all the naive pontificating in Heinlein, Le Guin, et al.

My favorite reading along these lines is stuff about old world Warhammer. As you're probably aware, this stuff is even trashier than Salvatore, but I really enjoy it, especially the Black Library books featuring Gotrek and Felix. William King started these and invented Thanquol, a Skaven Grey Seer and one of the greatest comic villains of all time.

Things like this are completely devoid of any literary merit, but at least there's no tedious utopian agenda or speechifying.
