I think she very deliberately created the look of Lucy Ricardo. You can study candid photos from the early '50s and see that she didn't really look like the show character. The makeup and costumes were designed to make her appear a little frumpy and ditzy. She was in her 40s but still very pretty in real life (imo).

People came to equate Lucille Ball with Lucy Ricardo, not realizing that Lucille carefully crafted every molecule and nuance of Lucy. By her own admission, she was not a good spontaneous comic. She had to prep and rehearse every gesture and line delivery. This is what makes her impressive to me. She wasn't a genius because she had a gift. She was a genius because she worked really hard at it.
