Your point stands on creating a separate, domesticated environment, but that doesn't mean it's needs to be grass; effectively, my front yard is xeriscaped with native plants, rocks, etc. And yeah, I may not have mice and racoons living in my house, but it also doesn't mean that grass is a wise choice in a state where we have to be pretty diligent about our water usage. Grass is fine, it looks nice and keeps weeds down, but it's not something I want to have to think about taking care of on a daily basis with watering and mowing; I have about 500 Sq Ft of grass we put down in the backyard and that's more than enough.
There was no and never has been an issue with the way my yard is xeriscaped; the original problem was the weeds we had in our first year, which we were taking care of in bits and pieces, but it wasn't fast enough for the Covenant and the old neighbors. Even when progress was obviously being made, we were still being harassed; which was further confirmed by other neighbors on our street, that Code Enforcement and Old people in the hood get bugs up their asses. Apparently they'll gradually leave you alone the longer you remain in the neighborhood, which has so far been our experience.
