Smoof, if you're reading the Book of the New Sun, you should keep in mind that the text is supposed to be a propagandistic autobiography written by Severian after he becomes Autarch. Severian claims to have an eidetic memory, but he sometimes contradicts himself, so you know he's telling lies. Whenever he mentions his perfect memory, you know he's making something up. However, Severian wants to be a good person, and the novel is basically a psychological study of a conflicted character.
If you like the setting but not the format, you may want to try the Long Sun and Short Sun series, which are set in the same universe, but written more like regular novels.
