As you probably know, Diablo 3 has a variation on the magic pixel rescue -- actually, more than one in the form of "skill" rolls and various items. I'm sure other ARPGs have similar mechanics. I always thought it was an interesting little liberality, especially with Blizzard's overwrought synergy schemes.
