Subject: Captain's log: orange peeling issue

AMT 1967 Shelby GT350 Mustang

Motor and interior went well. Mixed airbrushing and hand painting, topped off by a nice semi-gloss clear coat. Looks nice.

Body priming with airbrush went well. Decided to use an interesting dark blue metallic color coat on top of the black primer -- good effect. Compromised, however, by mysterious grainy effect commonly called "orange peeling." Tried to cover over with multiple coats of gloss clear varnish, but would not go away.

Stripped all paint by steeping in Super Clean. Excellent stuff.

Tried whole process again after thoroughly cleaning airbrush. Same orange peeling effect.

Just finished fourth try using a different color coat and closer application of clear gloss. Same result, so I decided to hose on the gloss instead of the conventional multiple light coats. This was better, but got uneven coverage.

Am determined not to repaint. Will try careful wet sanding with very fine grits under very light pressure. Then will attempt graduated polishing with Novus.

Whatever I get, that will be it. Time to move on.
