RE: Captain's log: orange peeling issue
For the next project, will probably go with a different paint company. Have been using Vallejo Model Air, which until now has been pretty well-behaved with light thinning and tiny doses of flow improver (a.k.a. "drying retardant"). I suspect that this brand likes to be up close on small surfaces, such as miniatures. Sustained painting at their recommended distance (as much as 20mm) from something like a car body may result in premature drying while atomizing.
I like Vallejo because of their pigment quality, but I think I should save it for Warhammer figures or something, which I may do in the future. Meanwhile, I should probably switch to Tamiya or Mr. Color, which have good track records with plastic models. Ideally, I should use something like
Zero Paints
, which appear to be formulated for model cars. Sadly, Zero is hard to get outside Europe.
