Subject: RE: I almost DIED...

Had my 4th flight today. First week I had to cancel 3 of 4 scheduled flights due to weather. Last week I had 2, and cancelled 2 for the same reason.

On my second flight, I didn't die at takeoff, but I almost did later when I looked out the side window. Slow flight is dramatic on the controls since they become less effective, so every required correction (and they are constant) takes a lot of movement on the yokes. On my 3rd flight, I forced myself to look out when I could, and the fear eased up a little, but then I almost died again when we did 45 degree banks which felt more like 90. My instructor insisted that we practice stalls, so I told him I'd like to just stick with power-off type, as the plane's pitch attitude isn't as dramatic despite recovery being a little more involved. On the other hand, going from something like 75% power to idle is a disconcerting feeling in itself. Today we did power-on stalls, and luckily they weren't as awful as I thought they would be. I always feel relieved when we're on final approach for landing.

I still feel a little uneasy with the heights thing, but I think it's getting better. I can't say I love flying yet, but I'm trying to force myself to. That's probably a pretty weird thing to do for something that costs like $100/hr.
