Finding earth-like paradise planets was much more difficult, but when you did find them, there were chances for them to be much more lush. People were complaining about there being too many barren planets so now they are all over the place and almost every planet has wildlife now. They scaled back the lushness to improve framerates because a lot of machines were struggling with the vegetation.
You can easily tell if a screenshot of an earth type planet is pre-update or not.
