RE: Paint chemistry
The tacit but obvious takeaway here is that painting -- like cooking -- is about chemistry. Guesswork about chemical reactions results in frequent disappointment. But actual chemistry is 100% reliable and predictable. Therefore, if you know your chemistry, you can have confidence in your paint.
Unfortunately, much of the paint used for demonstration in the video is not easily available in the U.S. For example, the MRP lacquer and the 2k mixes have almost no American outlets. Tamiya and Mr. Color are notoriously understocked in most hobby shops and have long shipping times online. If you think you'll want to use certain kinds of paint, you have to order really far in advance of your project start time.
Generally, Vallejo and Testors are more readily available than other brands. Both also, like some of the wargaming paint companies, have enough consideration to sell large sets of colors at discounted prices. Not so with the Japanese manufacturers.
Imagine the market -- the absolute killing -- the Japanese are missing out on in the U.S. market. They must know this. Why they don't act on it is beyond me.
