It's strange how I couldn't get enough of the Sopranos back when it aired. Today, it doesn't hold up so well. I wonder if I'll feel the same about Breaking Bad someday.

But I'm getting away from HBO. Does anyone remember Rome (2005-2007)? I missed it when it was new, so I decided to binge it on Amazon Prime. Now there was a great show. Every episode moved things along and had major character development. It was also colorful and interesting. Never mind that it made up its own history. For instance, Atia of the Julii (Octavian's mother) was nothing like the show's vindictive, psychopathic Machiavel. Servilla, mother of Brutus, did not commit suicide; nor did she have a vendetta against Atia. Other departures abound, but I didn't mind because the show was so much fun.

What happened to this kind of series? Game of Thrones sort of comes close, but it fell victim to today's drip-feed plot development. Boardwalk Empire was frustrating because the characters were so interesting but events moved too slowly.

If you want a good contemporary series, watch Billions on Showtime.

Showtime gets things done.

HBO is the La Brea Tar Pits of television.
