Subject: RE: Some notes about flocking

Before starting Tweedy Pie, I completed Revell's 1969 Boss 302 Mustang. Well, completed is not quite the right term, as I screwed up the decals and had to come up with a painted stripe scheme that wasn't too embarrassing. Also, I damaged the hood, so the engine compartment is open to the elements. Otherwise, it turned out pretty well.

I bring this up because we were talking about paint. This Mustang model often shipped with a very distinctive yellow base color. I could not for the life of me find this shade anywhere among the offerings of the most commonly used modeling paint manufacturers. I did find it at Walmart. It's a spray lacquer made by Krylon and seems to be intended for things like patio furniture. This probably explains why the dried paint creates a strange textured finish that is extremely durable. It's not orange peel. It seems to be an actual protective texture. At first, I was alarmed, but the more I looked at it, the more I liked it. It was as if Ford contracted with Rubbermaid to come up with a strangely pleasing finish. I may use it on other cars.
