I don't know anything about painting minis or figures, but I believe some enamels do indeed obscure details. Testors will do this, especially if it's brushed on in anything but light coats and not allowed to dry in between (I assume you're not airbrushing?). Even so, enamels have wonderful strengths you can't get with acrylics.

Yes, Warhammer is horribly expensive. Recently, I visited a Warhammer store/cafe. It was amazing, but I would never have paid what they wanted for any of that stuff. Well, maybe the Chaos Cookies.
