It is a little slow paced, but it isn't so bad that I find myself with nothing to do and I have a tendency to avoid combat, as I'm pretty shit at it.
But I think that's also something that draws me in; the fact that it's mostly slowly paced, you're not getting overwhelmed by shit to do, with an ever growing list of quests. But it's that slowness, which is punctuated by tense combat, which gets me. The combat is definitely janky, but it draws you in and makes you pay attention because it's both deadly and janky as hell.
At any rate, I'm still trying to figure out why I like it so much; most games don't usually draw me in the same way these days, but I'm not quite sure what that is.
For scratching my balls and playing games, however, Rimworld and Stellaris are best for that. Queue up some actions and watch your Pawns do some shit while you give those balls a thorough rub.
