I always forget that I should not join the Thieves Guild until after I get the Fighters Guild code book quest from Eydis Fire-Eye in Balmora. Waiting allows me to persuade Sotilde of the South Wall Corner Club to give me the book, which, supposedly, she will not do if I'm a member. As I recall, however, I was able to get around this by avoiding Eydis after a certain point and simply getting quests from other Fighers Guild locations. This allows me to rise in rank, which in turn allows other non-conflicting options. Postponing enlistment in the Thieves Guild is just an easier resolution. . . . I think. . . . Yes, pretty sure. . . . errmmm. . . .
