essential mods

MGE XE (comes with nvse nightly builds)
configure MGE and build meshes/textures using the wizard - HUGE graphical improvement

morrowind code patch - this is basically the community patch but much better. also includes many optional fixes which are not selected by default

enhanced textures - no brainer

vurts tree packs - this is definitely the best one. others exist which are more modern, but this one does the best job of fitting into the games style better. really great work here, especially the ashlands area which no other mod is comparable to.
hard to find all the vurt packs because they are not completely interlinked on any of his mod pages

ultimate icon replacer - vanilla icons but... better... vanilla images but more defined.

better dialog fonts - this is one of my favorites. its the same vanilla font but for HD. no noticeable difference if you run default hud size. but looks amazing when using MGE to increase the hud ratio. I scale my hud to 150% at 1080p. huge enjoyment with the larger crisp text. the morrowind font is really nice and this mod does it great justice. definitely one of my favorites.

MGG shaders - something to use with MGE XE

Tamriel Rebuilt full install (including preview) - MANDATORY

Wyre Mash 2019 fork - cleans the shit out of everything. really good work done here. will go through your save file and find mods which use broken scripts or assets and also correct a ton of other shit. example: TR uses a missmatched master version number and this app will find and update version bits, eliminating any warning messages on game load. mandatory if using any mods.

nexus mod manager community fork - essential for juggling mods, though a fair number of morrowind mods have a manual install directory structure which is not compatible. basically any mod with multiple folders where you manually choose the desired effect you want, will not work with NMM. simply take the mod you want and move it out of that folder and load it with NMM. NMM does work with everything else, it can even smart detect multiple folder levels and move the files correctly into morrowind install, though it only doesnt work when multiple esm files are layed out in a root folder with multiple branching esm folders

bsa registration utility - NMM can revert ini changes annoyingly. this app will auto register bsa for you. handy even if you dont use NMM
