RE: Not saying I'm going to upgrade
There's a neto-o game called Starsector which has been described as "Mount & Blade in space" by the people who play it. From screenshots you'd probably guess the game would have zero problems running on pretty much anything built after 2005, yet on the official game forums, there's a subset of players complaining about terrible performance, claiming that the game runs many times faster through software than through hardware acceleration. The consensus that was reached via data collection was that 100% of these users were running RX 500 series cards.
Eventually, people reached out to AMD and it was determined that the newer drivers have less than ideal implementations for older versions of OpenGL, which Starsector uses. This information was found roughly six months ago and AMD promised to look into it.
Fastforward to 2020, and their response has since changed to: We looked into it, we're not fixing the problem on the driver end as we don't feel like dedicating that resources to researching it. If you want to play games using older versions of OpenGL then run them through your integrated graphics chip.
Or, y'know, any old Nvidia card. Those run the game perfectly.
